Wandoan South Solar 2

Project Name Wandoan South Solar Stage 2
Technology Solar Photovoltaic
Capacity 240 MW
Project Size 817 ha
Location Woleebee, Queensland
Targeted Construction Q1 2025

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The Wandoan South Solar 2 is a large scale photovoltaic solar farm with a generating capacity of up to 240 MW of electricity, which is expected to produce approximately 704 GWh of energy annually. The solar farm will generate enough electricity annually to power approximately 120,000 homes, save 490 million litres of water, reduce CO2 emissions by 568,697 tons, or the equivalent of planting 9,478,288 trees, or taking 123,630 vehicles of the road (July 2024).

The Wandoan South Solar 2 is the second stage of solar to be developed as part of the approved Wandoan South Project – Vena Energy’s largest development. The solar farm is located approximately 21 km southwest of the township of Wandoan, with access via Gadsbys Road, Woleebee.

Wandoan South Solar 2 will be connected to Powerlink’s Wandoan South Substation, located immediately to the south of the site.

The solar farm will contribute to Queensland’s rapidly transforming energy system by providing renewable energy and electricity storage, contributing to the Queensland Government’s renewable energy target of 70 per cent renewable energy by 2032 and 80 per cent by 2035.

Planning Process

The Wandoan South Project’s development application for a Material Change of Use for a Public Utility (Solar Farm) was originally submitted in 2017. The application is regulated under the Planning Act 2016 and was assessed by the Western Down Regional Council in their capacity as the assessment manager. The Wandoan South Project was subject to the below development assessment process and was approved by the Council, in 2017.

ENGAGEMENT

Vena Energy is committed to ongoing and genuine engagement with the local community of Woleebee and Wandoan, and our Project stakeholders to build strong relationships and establish a socially sustainable project.

We will continue to engage with neighbours and broaden the consultation effort to include the wider community and stakeholders as the project progresses.

Benefits

As an emerging leader in sustainable energy development in Australia, Vena Energy understands that our long-term success goes hand-in-hand with enhancing the broader well-being of the communities and regions in which we operate. Vena Energy looks forward to making a positive contribution to the local community, the region’s economy, and the nation’s transition to renewable energy.

Wandoan South Solar 2 will provide positive outcomes for the local community through the provision of significant economic stimulus to the region through construction jobs, supplier contracts, and associated flow-on benefits to local businesses and contractors. Vena Energy supports a local procurement policy and will promote participation from local, regional, and Australian suppliers wherever possible. Local purchasing is likely to include a wide range of products and services from fencing contractors, concreters, welders, electricians, plant and equipment operators, transport contractors, and administrators.

Construction of the solar farm is expected to take approximately 23 months with approximately 300 workforce personnel present on site at the peak period of construction. Closer to construction, Vena Energy will provide the community with an invitation to express interest in employment opportunities and the provision of construction and maintenance services.

Vena Energy have also worked together with the landowner to maintain the agricultural viability across the site by integrating and co-locating agricultural infrastructure to accommodate animal grazing activities prior to the commencement of construction.

Approximately 18 full-time staff will be present during the operation of the solar farm. Additional part-time staff will be required on a regular basis to undertake electrical maintenance, site management and administration, environmental services, weed control, fire management, and site security.
